In the late summer of 2024, many people – including myself – contracted COVID and presented with symptoms. The weather was excessively hot and humid, and symptoms manifested accordingly to reflect summer heat illness. Externally induced illness will typically present with symptoms that reflect the seasonal climactic imbalance during which they occur. For example, illness that occurs in late summer when the weather is hot and humid can manifest with symptoms of nausea, diarrhea and vomiting that is caused by dampness in the digestive system.
Chinese medicine in general, and Chinese herbal medicine in particular, is effective at preventing and treating COVID-related symptoms. Chinese herbs can help to: strengthen the body to help prevent COVID infection in the first place, but herbs may also resolve acute COVID symptoms more quickly, prevent lingering symptoms and deeper illness that become Long COVID, and treat symptoms of Long COVID to aid in faster recovery. While there are some common Long Covid symptoms that seem to occur across different populations, such as fatigue, brain fog, or autoimmune responses, it’s important to have an evaluation and speak about your specific symptoms to receive proper treatment.
As there has been both more clinical experience in treating COVID and as the virulence of the illness has generally decreased over time, COVID is now an illness that can be safely and effectively treated with Chinese medicine. If you are traveling, exposed to crowds of people, feel run down, or already have symptoms of COVID or any other acute illness including cold and flu, Chinese herbs can help.
